Too many managers, wasteful spending in Administrative Computing Dept. - Associate Director Dartmouth Employee Review

Pros

Slow paced environment, not much expected of employees in the computing services dept, so the job is basically extremely easy. Attend a few meetings, write good notes, nod your head, and look busy, and they'll think you're a superstar. Great for people with low ambition who want to make more than they'll ever make on the open market or private industry.

Cons

Management in technical services believes that although they are severely over-manned, hiring outside consultants to do the heavy lifting is the way to cement your reputation as the "get-it-done" manager. Very, very political environment with practically 2 managers to every direct report. Complete inertia, lots of hesitation to try new things - the direct opposite of what John Kemeny wanted Dartmouth to be back in the 60's and 70's - and a reliance on outdated technologies and name brand services rather than any faith in university-friendly open source solutions that are simpler and cost less. Absolutely no diversity among the employee base - almost everyone is white. Lots of useless titles, e.g. Director of this, Senior Director of that, most that add up to no responsibilities at all.
