Pros

Flexible work schedule, decent pay and benefits. Most colleagues were talented and professional. Physical workspace was nice - newly designed and conveniently located in the heart of downtown Hanover.

Cons

Senior IT leadership did not have an IT education or background leading to poor decision making and several failed or delayed projects. In addition, IT priorities didn't always align with institutional goals. Second and third level management were arrogant and self centered. Most were more concerned about their own career and possessed limited people management skills. In two years the team had almost 100% turnover - most departing because of issues with management. The college operates on a consensus decision making model which can be frustrating if you're coming from the private sector. And clients (the various departments at the college) seem to have their own schedules and priorities that didn't always align with IT leadership expectations.

Pros

Beautiful campus nestled in the Upper Valley on the Connecticut River.

Cons

I worked for a verbally abusive director for 6 months. I asked HR for help but they were quick to say find a new job and turned the tables. After I left, I did some research... I was 1 of 6 employees that had left over the last 18 months (most with similar stories of the same kind of abuse).

Pros

A good set of colleagues who truly want to do great work and progress the mission forward, unfortunately you are too often road blocked by administration. Location is great if you like outdoors

Cons

Overall the organization is reactive and not proactive, no forward thinking or money invested into systems/process improvements. These processes are archaic, times have changed folks! Leadership is lacking across the college. Terrible supervisors are kept while its a revolving door of employees. The college can solve the problems by actually listening to employee complaints instead of brushing them off. They settle lawsuits and don't solve the root cause of the issue, it's just onto the next thing. Staff are not respected, all the decisions are based on what faculty and students want, staff are bottom of the barrell. The college cries broke all the time, but they have plenty of money but choose not to allocate it to staff salaries, it's a disgrace. It's clear they don't respect staff employees at all. Staff compensation is horrendous, unfair and unethical. The only way to ensure you are getting paid fairly is if the professional staff unionized, just like University of Vermont did recently.
