Pros
Everyone at Dartmouth College talks about how great it is to have a job there and the opportunities that come from being a part of that community, and for the most part I agree. There are many lectures and resources available to all employees, and the atmosphere that people want to be working there definitely adds to the value. There is a ton of independence in your position, but that often leads to one-person departments and people that can go their whole day with interacting with anyone else.
Cons
Because of oversight from many departments and endless layers of supervisors and leaders, there seem to be little accountability. Many departments have to work together to coordinate yearly events (reunions, orientations, etc.), but there is no mechanism to efficiently coordinate these things. There are many levels of supervising in each department, but there is no interdepartmental coordination, so if someone does not show up to an event that requires multiple departments, there is no real contact or process for following up there.
