Pros

- Some of the best people I've ever had the pleasure to work with in my career - Rewarding work in a vulnerable space that needs help now more than ever. - Flexible work, for now anyway. Compensation and benefits are standard.

Cons

- It's very clear that the other shoe is dropping with the parent company. Ever since the departure of the previous President and CEO, the influence of Curriculum Associates has become increasingly aggressive. I wouldn't be surprised if Ellevation were entirely consumed by them within the next three years. - The obsession with AI from management is bizarre and cultlike. In the past Ellevation was a company that was thoughtful about its usage of tools and encouraged open discussion about their pros and cons. Now you have to slog through reams of generic text and meaningless AI speech that leadership swears is "revolutionary". There is a formal expectation of AI usage, and anything less than perfect enthusiasm about it is swiftly and forcefully silenced. - It's not just about AI, though. The grounded and thoughtful culture that made Ellevation a great place to work is dead. There's no open discussion anymore, and no interest from leadership in diversity of thought in general. All the previous progress the company made on diversity initiatives has been dismantled. For people who come into the office, the environment there has become uncomfortable and tense, lest someone in leadership overhear you saying the wrong thing. - The senior leadership team has deeply fragile egos. So much of my work this year was more about making them feel better about problems they created in their heads rather than actually solving the real problems in front of us. There is no trust in people to do the jobs they were hired to do anymore.

Pros

One of the better places I've worked. It is remote, with one offsite per year that could have been an email, but you never feel micromanaged. The people are genuinely great, and they hire well; everyone's helpful and easy to work with. It also feels like the mission is real, not just something they slap on the website; you can tell your work actually matters and connects to something bigger. And the workload is reasonable, which honestly feels rare these days

Cons

That said, things have shifted in the last few years. There's a real sense of instability in the market right now, and it's bled into how work feels day-to-day, everything's got this undercurrent of urgency and edge that wasn't there before. Leadership hasn't been transparent about it either; the messaging tends to paint a picture that everything's fine, but it's pretty clear financially that it's not. After the layoffs last November, that same uneasy feeling is creeping back in, and it's hard to trust the reassurances when the pattern keeps repeating.
