Pros

I was fully committed to the company, singing its praises in the Northern VA market, investing in company stock, and recommending others to apply and join the best team I’d ever worked for. However, my experience in Knoxville, TN was starkly different. Consistent pros: company wide-trading training, opportunities for career growth, busy time of the year in this industry is spring through fall.

Cons

Approximately 1/3 of the facilities in Knoxville fall short of Extra Space's standards as touted in industry magazines where they recruit for facility management opportunities. The district leadership fosters an environment treating employees like minimum-wage retail workers, characterized by constant negativity and minimal support in daily operations due to high manager turnover. The overall tone being set is one of disposability and lack of respect to managers. I felt what I encountered was completely unacceptable. ESS professes support and respect for its employees. My attempts to engage with the 'employee experience' department left me feeling abandoned. Despite making detailed reports, assurances of investigations leading to interviews never materialized. The work environment grew increasingly toxic. As someone averse to conflict, I was deeply disappointed that my efforts to improve conditions only led to more grinding days rather than the smooth operation it should have been. Assistants have little to no choice in which facilities they have to work at. Newer company standards are for 1 person to run 1 or more facilities singly can be overwhelming during busy season or for new hires as well as seasoned managers.

Pros

The position is easy to do and the tasks are simple. The work relationships with the store managers and my dtls are excellent. My District Manager is always available to make sure I'm doing my job and gives amazing advice on how to advance in the company with kpi updates.

Cons

Deal with a lot of stress on the job. Have to work behind a person who may not have done the job they were supposed to do.

Pros

Solid schedule - 40 hours per week, not expected to be there more than that. No one looking over your shoulder constantly (unless you have a new DM, they can't seem to help it) Mostly great people to work with Local, immediate management does care and are helpful.

Cons

Very large rate increases really upset customers and that's just too bad. We are given word to tell them but it just isn't true. Putting more money in stock holder's pockets is the bottom line and it doesn't matter how much anger we have to deal with. You are absolutely expected to sell insurance to every renter. However, you must be careful because you aren't "insurance salesmen". You get a ding when you don't sell it. We are encouraged to use evasive language and rush through it so the renter thinks it's required without quite saying so. You would think this large of a corporation would have handymen available but it is so, so difficult to get the smallest repair done due to getting bids from vendors, turning them in, reminding the person you turned them in to what needs done maybe getting approval, then scheduling. By that time lights (or whatever) have been out for a month or 2. Benefits are very expensive and cover so little.
