Pros
In an industry that is predicated on interpersonal relationships, none are more important than the ones you foster with your colleagues. I am fortunate to say that I met some really great people in both the expedited as well as the general brokerage division. Regardless of your thoughts of the company, those relationships were real and authentic and I met some terrific individuals who work at Fastmore.
Cons
Keep in mind, I am speaking for the expedited division only: The free breakfast on Mondays, the ridiculous coffee machine in the kitchen, the Bonusly reward program ---this is all complete smoke & mirrors to mask the notion that Fastmore does not care at all about your work/life balance. If you are an LAE or a carrier rep, there is very minimal of that work/life balance. This is a company that markets themselves to their clients as a 24/7 hot shot company but Fastmore is not staffed that way, at all. This industry can be a grind, and the ability for reps to be able to scale back on the nights & weekends is non-existant. The compensation model for carrier reps (although improved during my tenure) is still completely unfavorable. Another tidbit I'd like to share is that the lure to a small to mid-sized privately held company is the ability to be in an environment in which everyone looks out for each other and support is given from ownership down. Personally speaking, I went through some extremely trying personal times during the course of my tenure at Fastmore, and I was even very transparent with my boss in regards to this. Looking back at it, I'm not surprised at all that the owners did not even acknowledge the fact I was going through a life altering incident during my employment(finalized a divorce w/ 3 kids). It would've been extremely nice and thoughtful if they could've at least said or asked how I was doing. I received none of that! Instead the day after I moved into my new house I was offered a 1 month severance or had to vastly improve my performance. As always, I bet on myself and I made the improvements necessary. Being a divorced dad, I had a modified schedule (had to leave at 4 PM on Wed) and leave early at 4 pm every other Friday. This was court-mandated stuff and I shared this all with HR and my boss, in which I received their blessings. When I was let go, one of the reasons was due to a verbal altercation between my direct reports on a Wednesday post 4 PM in which I wasn't in the office. Another reason for letting me go was carrier negligence on a particular lane that we sourced. For anyone who works in 3PL, it is apparent that the brokers can only have so much control over what truly transpires between origin, transit and destination and the case was made that I was responsible for deceptive behavior with a carrier on a particular lane. Nonetheless, it was a complete BS and lame reason to terminate somebody in a brokerage. Long story short, very little authentic care and concern for the employees who bust their rears and are the true backbone behind the operation.
