Success at this company, especially in the advanced research division, is heavily dependent upon how well or how badly your boss shields you from upper management's toxicity. There is an intense culture of favoritism and scape-goating. Even the most promising, interesting projects are often very unfocused, and can be picked up and dropped with dizzying frequency. There is immense pressure to work longer than a typical 40-hour week (this is tacitly endorsed by HR). Even the most toxic managers (multiple complaints, revolving door of direct reports) are not removed. The offices are dreary with rows of beige cubicles. There are multiple buildings spread out, and have to be trudged between multiple times a day even in the dead of winter.
