Pros

When I first started several years ago, pros were working from home, flexible hours, one on one attention for students, nice salary for a 40 hour work week, BUT THIS ALL CHANGED. These pros no longer exist!! I left FLVS, and have not been happier since. DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR JOB FOR FLVS. You will regret it.

Cons

Flexible hours at FLVS now simply mean that you work all the time. Florida teachers are considered exempt professionals, which means that according to state law, you can be required to work as many hours in as many days, without any breaks, holidays or weekends, as required by your employer. This is legal. FLVS takes full advantage of this, requiring teachers to be available 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. They also pressure you to work up to 10pm. My supervisor actually yelled at me when I did not take a phone call on my wedding day, which was on a Sunday. FLVS speaks with a forked tongue to employees, telling them to takes breaks, and spend time with family, then punishing when they do. If you want to use any of your annual leave days for a vacation, you must complete your normal workload (which is already overwhelming) plus your workload for the amount of time you want to leave. FLVS is focused on numbers and money despite constantly touting a "student centered decision" catchphrase. If teachers try to do something that would prevent them from answering the phone, such as eating dinner with their family, or going to a Friday night movie, the opportunity for a parent or student to call, and complain that the teacher is "not available" presents itself. This induces a state of constant panic in many teachers, who are told by administration to "not panic, and take time away", but then inconsistently threatened when they do. I gave a lot to FLVS, but won't mention that list here, because people will then know who I am... only to end up in my last year with a bullying, abusive supervisor who undermined me at every opportunity. Unfortunately, by that time, FLVS had grown so large, that I was just another number. I had to leave this environment for my sanity, my family's functional health, and because I truly care about students, and grew tired of seeing them treated like cattle.

Pros

I am valued as an educator and treated as a professional. I love my principal and my co-workers. They encourage work life balance and listen to feedback.

Cons

I wish we were paid more but that is education as a whole. I do think FLVS flex pays competitively and I have got a raise every year.

Pros

Flexibility! Ultimate flexible schedule. Day to day I use calendar to schedule appointments and can block out lunchtime, time for a gym class or to pickup or drop off at car line at school. Ability to work from home office in comfort! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️You can set up your space to be most comfortable for you. Coffee breaks and yoga pants all day 🙌🏻Summers are slower in flex so allows more time to do personal summer activities like sit at the pool. Access to email on phone (with a communication stipend) so I can “work” from anywhere. I check email and Teams from grocery store, etc. More time to get to know students during welcome calls and DBAs but I often feel so rushed to complete so many appointments each day that I sometimes don’t feel like I can give each family the time they deserve.

Cons

Can be long hours in front of a computer. Some days I’m stuck in front of my computer for 6-8 full hours with back to back Zoom appointments. It can be REALLY tiring. Heavy workloads pouring peak enrollment times: May/ August and December. Your evaluations are based on your data so parents that do not follow learning expectations and don’t submit coursework affects your negatively. It feels very unfair and frustrating. Monthly classroom walk throughs with your principal feel like a formality and waste of time for high performing instructors. For the workload, I do think salary should be higher. Student loads can be really high in August and December with over 180-200 enrollments at once to balance. It’s a lot. Work-life balance is grossly unbalanced during these times.
