Pros
Pay is at a good Rate, Benefits are great but now have to pay for them like at most other companies. The union is both good and bad - good for pay and benefit negotiations and for protection from unfair discipline or favoritism.....but it is bad because along with the good employees, the worst employees who do the bare minimum to keep their job (or even less) get protection when they have no business working with paying customers. Most of my colleagues were great, but some were horrible, and allowed to behave that way openly. It is a general reflection of society, except for the fact that in some offices the management not only allows, but enjoys letting the employees treat each other poorly....examples: cursing at each other, demoralizing one another, putting up sexist screen savers on your computer saying women should be at home and not at an office, sexual and gay slurs and name calling. Basically the worst of what you imagine experiencing at a high school party with no chaperone. I will say that the atmosphere varies depending on which department you work in. I moved through several departments due to changes in business needs and our organization changing my office's responsibilities.
Cons
Unethical management and higher ups in the corporation, employees are encouraged not to care about the customer but instead to just meet status quo and not rock the boat. I worked in 3 different offices over the span of over a 10 years, and in every office, except for 1 of them, at least one of the male supervisors was having affairs with the employees they supervised. In two of the offices the managers above the supervisors were having affairs. The trend was encouraged it seemed. The key to working there without feeling like your soul is being compromised is to keep your head down and do your job, stay away from management (unfortunate bcz that limits your potential and the sharing of ideas) because good deeds are looked at as something other than good, and to save your money. I would not recommend this job to a friend or a family member because the money and the benefits are not worth working with and under such an immoral corporation....
