The work itself wasn’t the problem. The people on the client side were doing meaningful work, and there were talented individuals across the engagement. Unfortunately, the internal experience often felt disorganized and lacking the fundamentals of a healthy professional workplace. This felt much more like a company focused on winning and staffing contracts than one that had spent time intentionally building its culture. Systems that should have been foundational—structured onboarding, objective performance standards, clear promotion expectations, meaningful management, and accountability—either didn’t exist or weren’t consistently applied. Performance reviews felt rushed and disconnected from the work people actually performed. There were no objective metrics for comparable roles, making evaluations feel subjective. Career development depended heavily on who happened to be managing you at the time rather than on a consistent process. The most disappointing part was the lack of accountability. I witnessed unprofessional behavior that should have been addressed but often wasn’t. As long as work continued moving and the client relationship wasn’t affected, leadership often seemed reluctant to step in. That created an environment where professionalism felt optional and employees had little confidence that concerns would lead to meaningful action. I also noticed very little visible diversity in leadership and didn’t see much evidence that the organization had invested intentionally in building an inclusive workplace culture. Culture doesn’t happen by accident, and in my experience it often felt underdeveloped. It also wasn’t unusual to hear people across the engagement discussing transferring to different projects because of the working environment. The conversations were rarely about the technical work itself and much more about the day-to-day experience. The company has capable people and opportunities to do interesting work, but it would benefit from treating organizational culture, leadership development, accountability, and employee growth as strategic priorities instead of secondary concerns.
