Pros

Co-workers are in general a joy to work with. Managers vary but generally provide their reports with good work/life flexibility. If you get a good manager, he or she will provide you with excellent support and training opportunities.

Cons

As with most defense contractors, it's all about getting the "big contract." BD teams are incentivized to nail down big money, long-term contracts, but often shoot too high, and fail to first determine if the company has the ability to meet contractual obligations until after the bid process has started. The recent re-centralization of manufacturing to Huntsville, AL from other locations in Ohio and Virginia has been a years-long logistical nightmare. The company is currently owned by a bank, exacerbating the bean-counter mentality, and HDT is perpetually on the block to be sold for the right price. This reality seeps into the corporate mindset and from there to the employees, giving the feeling that your days there are numbered. In fact the company has downsized multiple times in the past few years, so your days are probably numbered after all. However if the company is sold to a larger contractor, there may be some benefit in a big restructuring and weeding out of the corporate structure in Ohio.
