Pros

HZ was a good company. There was a strong engineering culture, a solid product, and a healthy business.

Cons

Engineering culture has been destroyed. This has been going on for quite a few years, but in the last 1.5 years, it rapidly increased. Most of the engineers with a deep understanding of the domain/product have left the company. Many of the engineers that are still with the company stopped caring, are worried about their future, and will jump ship when they get a chance. Engineering managers have little or no experience with distributed systems and are primarily busy with writing reports and updating JIRA. Engineers are replaceable units and their opinions or understanding are ignored. It is a 100% top-down company. All new hires are from the UK. Offices outside of the UK are closed. There is no career opportunity for engineers outside of the UK and it is likely that you will be replaced at some point. If you are in the UK and consider joining, be warned. At first glance, it will look fine and it will look like 'leaders' know what they are talking about, but if you dig a bit deeper you will see the sinking ship. Pros

The technology itself is great and used by many big-name customers in mission critical systems. The culture is very collegial and there is generally a lot of collaboration up and down and across the org chart. Employees have a fair amount of autonomy. People work hard but a balanced life is encouraged.

Cons

Frequent direction changes. It's a necessary function of the market the product serves and tech in general but at times it can be stressful.
