Pros
The benefits and building relationships with the kids were the biggest pros for me. My coworkers were friendly and we'd get together for drinks after work about once or twice a month and socialize. There was a lot of coaching, which is great for a new teacher, but it isn't consistent and there aren't a lot of strategies provided beyond what you learn in training at the beginning of the year.
Cons
Oh boy, where to start? The school preaches about data and that's what seems to matter the most to them - that everything looks good on paper. If you don't have a degree and are in a co-teacher position, your pay is abysmal. There is no work/life balance. I was an hourly employee and was expected to call parents, submit grades, and sometimes create lesson plans after work even though OT was discouraged. Per my position, I shouldn't have had to create lesson plans and should have only submitted two grades for students per quarter, but the school I was at decided it wasn't enough and that I needed to create assignments. There wasn't communication between regional leaders for my position and the school itself and there was never a clear set of expectations. If I did what my school wanted, I'd get in trouble with the regional team and if I did what the regional team wanted, I'd get in trouble with my school. When I expressed concerns, they were swept aside. It was exhausting. Texts were constant and could come from 5 am to 11 pm. We had three mandatory meetings before and after school a week and I had other regional meetings once a month. Coaching sessions ate up my prep period and didn't offer a lot of advice. I was a new teacher and I struggled a lot, but when I asked for help I was told that I was weak for even asking. When it was time for report cards, admin wanted us to change grades so that students appeared to be doing better than they were. That's when I started feeling like the position wasn't right for me. I expressed concern about it and was told that if I wasn't failing as a teacher then all of my students would be passing and that if I didn't change grades, I'd need to call every parent and tell them how I failed their students with my ineptitude. I left after that.
