Pros

1. Executive leadership 2. Passionate and smart engineers 3. A product area with very few competitors

Cons

All the cons are related to Engineering 1. Toxic Engineering culture where all engineers (and Product management) need to bow to one long-standing engineer else risk get shot down 2. Collaboration with other folks on your work is strongly discouraged. This culture makes every person fend for himself/herself 3. The concept of Team work is implicitly discouraged. 4. Cliques are the order of the day. Loudest voices silence out other voices. 5. Domineering behavior by some individuals in presence of management is ignored or actions taken (if any) have no effect. 7. Engineering management is feckless at best and apathetic at worst 8. Mix of arcane, obscure, and obsolete technologies with some new ones. The obscure technology stack and obstinacy to change is what is driving productivity down tremendously. I wouldn't recommend this to any of my friends or acquaintances. Time for me to leave this toxic ship

Thanks for your candid and detailed feedback, both positive and negative. Direct feedback is what enables an individual and an organization to learn and grow. The engineering culture that you describe is not what we want, nor in any way encourage. It’s my experience that a culture like that hinders innovation and progress and rarely results in success. I strongly believe that a component of our success is due to the fact that we’ve worked hard to empower our employees and teams. I’d encourage you to raise your concerns directly to the highest levels in the company. As a small company, leadership at Illumio is accessible to everyone, and is very open to feedback from employees. If you reach out, your concerns will be heard and addressed. Ben Verghese, VP of Engineering

Pros

Transparent, open culture – Illumio emphasizes honesty and direct communication, even on tough topics Recognition-driven environment – wins are celebrated across teams and employees are recognized by peers and leadership Collaborative + partnership mindset – teams operate with accountability and strong cross-functional alignment Inclusive and diverse workplace – strong emphasis on belonging, varied backgrounds, and different perspectives

Cons

High standards, accountability, and pressure to perform Not necessarily negative—but can feel intense depending on the team/role. Change happens often if you don't like change you will not like it here. I love change and I love that we are always trying to improve or be better. 401(k) plan without company matching- this is normal for our stage and employee count but candidates mention this alot. I wanted to flag it. They do give us a retirement savings account and mine is doing well but no match.

It sounds like we're doing well in delivering on what you joined us for in terms of your experience, which is great to hear. And thanks for sharing some of the perspectives on the pace of change; I agree that when you're growing and scaling like we are, it can feel fast - as a senior leadership team, we're committed to ensuring we do our best to communicate at the team, org and company level as often and as transparently as we can.
