Disorganized and Chaotic - Land Use Planner J-U-B Engineers Employee Review

Pros

The pay is above average. My department doesn't know how to use outlook calendar so they don't track your time. We use a whiteboard to track time off, which is insane, but you can take off whenever you like and nobody cares because they have no idea what you are doing. The lack of organization and leadership gives you the freedom to come and go as you please.

Cons

There is a glaring lack of diversity at this company. There are very few women and minorities in senior positions. The management style is disorganized and chaotic. They do not train project managers or give them tools to track projects or timelines. The only way PMs prioritize projects is by how angry the client gets when the project doesn’t move. It's surprising that projects get completed, but they certainly don't get completed on time. The clients we have are very unhappy with how sloppy the work is and some have resorted to bribing project managers to get started on their projects because otherwise the project just sits. This also leads to a very reactive work environment instead of a proactive one. The project managers often can't remember to who they assigned projects, so a lot of times the work is done twice. This company does not care about individual success, they will not train you or help advance your skills. If anything I have lost a lot of my skills because the company refuses to use technology and programs that other firms use. Many engineers and PMs treat women very poorly and get away with it, so beware of that if we are considering working here. The people here love to gossip negatively about co-workers and people working at other agencies, this creates a very negative work environment.

Pros

This is a fantastic place to work! J-U-B prioritizes the balance of providing adequate structure and resources to support and grow staff while still treating people like people instead of cogs in a wheel. I would highly recommend (and actively do to friends and family) working at J-U-B. I left the company because a very unique opportunity unexpectedly came along, but before that I actively told people I couldn't see myself leaving the company unless I moved somewhere that J-U-B didn't have an office. The people there are collaborative, encouraging, maintain high standards for their work, promote a healthy and enjoyable work culture, and respect and promote work-life balance. Again, I highly recommend this employer for anyone who wants to do high-quality work with good people while still having space for a balanced personal life.

Cons

I have few to no cons with working here. But in the spirit of giving a well-rounded review, I'll share one insight I heard from a few individuals. I think J-U-B seeks to be flexible with its employees in the type of work they perform, but as with any larger company, structured positions with specializations help with project delivery quality and efficiency. Personally, I felt I had a strong variety in my project diversity, having the opportunity to work on unique and different projects rather than designing the same thing over and over again. However, some felt the structure limited them from having the wide variety of project/discipline types that they desired.
