Pros

The students were the only pro. But the cons make it hard to even stay for them. Don’t let leadership shame you into staying.

Cons

Toxic leadership Long hours, little pay Passive Aggressive micro-management from certain leaders Extreme micro-management from other leaders Lack of understanding diversity Lack of concern for emotional health of teachers Team building was masked and bandaged with “hot cooked meals” for lunch whenever they noticed stress levels running high amongst teachers. Teachers of color given harder time than teachers who were friends with leadership and apart of majority population. (Example: being 30 secs late to a meeting resulted in an email warning....White counterpart always late in the morning to school was shown getting a hug and a “try not to be late so much” pat) (multiple teachers of color talked of receiving reprimand emails for being 1 minute or less late to meetings...when asked other teachers who were White had not received an email.) At anytime your title can be changed. You can come in a Science teacher with only science experience and they will without notice shift you to being a Math teacher. (Witnessed this happen several times) The list goes on

KIPP St. Louis Response

Thank you for your time with KIPP. Although you may have experienced a less than desirable environment as mentioned in your statements above, your primary focus remained with the students. That is the type of character our teams carry each and every day. To address your feedback in grassroots stages of building the KIPP region, we experienced degrees of strain as the organization grew. Now with 6 schools and leadership roles filled, we are honing in on this feedback and others to improve the employee environment. Our new Director of HR is a key business partner and will work closely with staff to address any concerns. As we conducted our DEI audit earlier this year, we affirmed our belief in being an anti-racist and anti-sexist organization striving to do what's best for our students, team members, and communities. Thank you for growing with us. We will be better than prior years and appreciate your feedback!

Pros

The teachers work really well together Everyone help each other out

Cons

Administration expects teachers to be guidance counselor, social worker, nurse, and parents to the students. While this is expected at some level, the amount times teachers must play these other roles is not healthy at all.
