Pros

I can only speak for my department, but I was privileged to work with a wonderful and cooperative team, and I had a great supervisor. For the most part my responsibilities were fair, and I enjoyed much of the work. Decent benefits too, and a good pension plan if you stick it out that long.

Cons

The payscale classification is a joke. No one has had raises in five years, and nowadays the only way to get a raise is by "reclassification," and the only way to do that is a) by getting a position in another department, or b) if your supervisor receives a reclassification. Do NOT work here if you are looking for decent pay or promising promotion opportunities. Especially over the next few years with the SPSU consolidation, pay and hiring are going to be extremely static, and I imagine responsibilities are going to increase significantly. Other universities pay much more fairly, and I imagine KSU's growth and success will suffer in the long run because of this if they do not make a change.

Pros

Those are really good opportunities for you to gain more experience on your resume while in school. Depending on who your supervisor is, you will get different projects and experience. It's not just strictly "lab research" like the name suggests. Also, beyond your job, you will learn a lot from your professor, aka supervisor, too. In my experience, I have worked with multiple professors, and they are all amazing people who understand you're still a student, are very flexible with your schedule, and always push for your success. Big pros: You get a tuition waiver depending on your job's tier (meaning how much work and how many hours per week you work, which is stated clearly on the website and by your supervisor). There's a stipend paid on top of that.

Cons

I haven't had any cons so far.

Pros

The only true "pro" to this career and this employer is the job security. As long as you do your job and do it well, it is likely that you'll remain employed here. If you get lucky, like I did, you'll work with a great immediate team of folks.

Cons

No upper movement. The company would much rather bring in outside hires rather than promote from within. Pay is on the lowest end of the USG for this role. Work/life balance is absolutely horrible.
