No Advancement or Salary Raises - Academic Advisor Kennesaw State University Employee Review

Pros

The benefits are great as per USG.

Cons

There are absolutely NO salary raises even though there is a mandatory performance evaluation each year! There are never any merit increases. You can work in the same position for five years and not be moved to a next level advising title/salary; you will always be a Level 1 even if you have over 5 year's experience. The academic advising salary at KSU does not afford a person the ability to survive. Though USG gave a $5k increase to everyone as a market rate increase, an adult especially a single parent/salary cannot truly survive on $45k/year considering the cost of living in Georgia. Rent is extremely high and truly not affordable with this salary. Working here will have an employee shopping at Goodwill, Salvation Army, Must Ministries, and getting food from pantries because the salary does not afford comfortable living. In other words, this is a great job if you are satisfied with living 'almost' paycheck to paycheck! This job will place you in the bracket of 'The Working Poor!'

Pros

Those are really good opportunities for you to gain more experience on your resume while in school. Depending on who your supervisor is, you will get different projects and experience. It's not just strictly "lab research" like the name suggests. Also, beyond your job, you will learn a lot from your professor, aka supervisor, too. In my experience, I have worked with multiple professors, and they are all amazing people who understand you're still a student, are very flexible with your schedule, and always push for your success. Big pros: You get a tuition waiver depending on your job's tier (meaning how much work and how many hours per week you work, which is stated clearly on the website and by your supervisor). There's a stipend paid on top of that.

Cons

I haven't had any cons so far.

Pros

The only true "pro" to this career and this employer is the job security. As long as you do your job and do it well, it is likely that you'll remain employed here. If you get lucky, like I did, you'll work with a great immediate team of folks.

Cons

No upper movement. The company would much rather bring in outside hires rather than promote from within. Pay is on the lowest end of the USG for this role. Work/life balance is absolutely horrible.
