Pros
The only good thing I can say about working at Smith’s in Elko, NV is the co workers. Management isn’t part of that statement. They only care about their bonuses, themselves and how they look. If you call in sick or with any kind of emergency they will punish you. You will lose your hours and become a target for write ups and overbearing work expectations that you’ll be punished for if unable to complete. 10 years I’ve been here and I’ve seen multiple employees break down, been yelled at in public while working, cry repeatedly due to being made to feel unimportant and as if nothing has been or can be done right and eventually employees can’t take anymore and walk out or just never show back up. If you are in cahoots with management you’ll be ok until you make someone mad. You will have the desired shifts, the hours and the feeling of belonging and that you are an asset to the company but one call in during the wrong time-ie walk with Reno uppers, holiday rushes, any other call in same day-will find you on the other side of anything good. Right now some employees are being scheduled only 12-20 hours but it’s for 4-5 days, 4 hrs a day. Since legally you have to be scheduled for no less than 12 hrs a week you will get the legal amount but they will make it as much as an inconvenience as they possibly can. You are nothing more than a replaceable number that is entered into a time clock.
Cons
Before Covid Kroger used to load each employee’s card with $100 to be used (in their store only) to buy Thanksgiving dinner or whatever we wanted to buy with it. No holiday bonus, no thank you, no extra for Christmas either but at least they loaded $100. Now we all receive a $10, TEN DOLLAR, gift certificate in the mail to be used with a message of how thankful Kenny Kimball is for all our hard work that year. Talk about a slap in the face!! If you are expecting a Christmas party you’ll get one. You sign up for their employee association and every paycheck they will deduct $2 and then you have your party. If you choose to not be apart of the association you have to pay $20/person to attend the Christmas party. If you enjoy having a set schedule and/or 40hrs a week you’re out of luck. Everyone except managers are considered “part time” and nobody is guaranteed 40 hrs/week. Unless you’re lucky you do not have a set schedule every week. One week you’ll work early shifts, next could be all closings and the following can be mid shifts mixed with whatever they need. The other down fall with schedules is you cannot see your schedule until the Friday that is 2 days before. Example: You cannot see your schedule for the week of Sunday the 20th-Saturday the 26th until the Friday the 18th.
