Pros

If you are blind or visually impaired and unemployed, this is a great place to get a basic job and learn about manufacturing. Good opportunity to get free braille and computer classes. Some neat people work here.

Cons

Some supervisor's are stricter than others, and some communicate better than others, but communication through the organization is a long term problem. Causes many employees to give up and "just do the job." Hopefully a turnover will help? Great to have a blind CEO but he is not in touch with what most workers really think and feel. Seems the upper executives are very separate in their nice large offices, it feels like they look down on the manual laborers as less than. Some of the supervisors are spread way too thin, doing too much, and it effects everything g and everyone.

Pros

The mission of the company brings people together who truly care about making an impact in the lives of individuals who are Blind, DeafBlind and blind with other disabilities. Since starting with The Lighthouse almost 3 years ago, I have witnessed many conversations that have resulted in improvements to benefits, onboarding processes, and the employee experience as a whole. The HR Team works tirelessly to respond to issues and to make improvements. The CEO, and management team truly care about it's team members and there is an atmosphere of teamwork and open communication throughout the company. The Workforce Development Manager role was added as a new role in 2022 and I've seen very positive results from this addition to the team. Team members who are blind have an opportunity for 1:1 meetings to explore career choices and workshops and trainings are offered to cover important career topics. There is a lot that The Lighthouse is doing right.

Cons

With limited budgets, ongoing industry challenges, and program restrictions, sometimes it can be difficult to make all the desired improvements required to keep high employee satisfaction while also helping employees to understand the reason behind some decisions. However, The Lighthouse does very well with doing what it can do with what it has.

Pros

It’s a job and paycheck

Cons

Sheltered work environment.New hire and ten year employee pay gap is minimal. They boast livable wages and act like they are helping the blind/VI community but most employees at lower levels are struggling even after long term employment. Massive pay gap between executive management and front line workers. Hard to understand from a $100 million/year company Current CEO is fully sighted and is unwillingto advance blind employees into executive/upper management
