AVOID at all costs. - Eye Technician Lions World Vision Institute Employee Review

Pros

Because you need money to survive and they have zero hiring/experience requirements. Or you're interested in working in Healthcare and think this will be a foot in the door.

Cons

They schedule you "on call" as a part time employee, and expect you to respond immediately, but do not pay you for your time unless you get sent out on a case. At this point your shift may vary from 4 hrs to 16 or more. You will be driving all over Western Washington, alone, and you will work on cadavers alone, at all hours of the night, sometimes in appalling, or downright dangerous environments. There will be no room for advancement, no bonuses for providing them with outstanding tissue quality (each cornea is sold for $900-$5000), and they will break OSHA laws, fully expecting you to not know your rights or put up a fight. They pay lipservice to mental health support, will not provide you with healthcare benefits, and whatever perks they promise (Costco membership, snacks) can be taken away at will without notice. This company gave me CPTSD. Not necessarily from the cadaver work (which is objectively rough, especially with messy coroners cases) but from the dehumanizing, appaling way they treat their employees.

The role of the Recovery Technician can be taxing, and we are very grateful to our Recovery team that make great contributions to our mission. We purpose to create an environment in which you can thrive, and we are open to hearing feedback as to how we can further improve. Our full-time per diem employees are eligible for our healthcare company plans, which include mental health coverage. Knowing how this environment can affect staff, all employees are offered external EAP resources to help during the difficult times in life. Our pay programs are regularly surveyed to ensure we are compensating fairly. LWVI prioritizes the health and safety of all our employees. We ensure that federal and state safety laws are enforced. Anyone who feels unsafe should reach out to their manager or HR, especially when travelling to external work locations. The HR team is more than happy to discuss any concerns and feedback to improve work experience.

Pros

This is the best work environment I’ve ever had hands down. Management is thoughtful and competent. Most people are super driven and caring, which makes a big difference in the day to day environment. One thing they do well is promote from within and really focus on doing the most good for those who need transplants. To me, the top highlight is the people you get to work with. Their hearts are in the right place and there’s a lot of support between coworkers. The PTO and benefits are good and pay has gone up recently. It’s also a very inclusive organization and very LGBT friendly.

Cons

Like many places, there are some slow periods as well as more intense times crunch times.

Pros

Great team environment with coworkers who genuinely support one another. The mission behind the work makes the job feel meaningful and rewarding, especially knowing the impact it has on others

Cons

Like many fast-paced organizations, communication gaps and inconsistent follow-through can occasionally impact morale. Middle management works hard to support staff but can sometimes appear caught between employee needs and top-down expectations that may not always align with the day-to-day realities and challenges teams experience

Thank you for the feedback and sharing your experience. We always appreciate hearing our teammates’ perspectives to see how we can improve and continue to operate with excellence. We heard similar feedback in the most recent annual employee engagement survey. Leadership has implemented changes from these results and is reviewing other potential changes.
