The flexibility of the AE position is amazing (depending on how big your territory is). The company benefits/perks are also great (company car & gas card, health & dental benefits, RRSP, etc). My favorite part of the job was traveling to new territories and spending the day with other sales reps learning from them and the different industries I got to gain experience in. Our annual district meetings were also very engaging and I enjoyed building my skill set even further with my colleagues.

Cons

The territory assigned to associates can be very expansive, depending on where you are operating out of. There were some days where I was on the road for close to 10 hours, knowing I had at least a couple of hours of administrative work to complete when I got home. The work/life balance can be difficult to obtain in that circumstance. Due to recent changes within the company, it is extremely difficult to be competitive in regard to price and product offering. The penetration, retention, and acquisition of new accounts has been effected by this as well. I also felt very pressured to perform at times, and the competitive disadvantage made me feel very stuck. The commission structure was also confusing.

MSC has a new CEO and several external executive leaders who have joined the organization with a clear vision to transform the business. The people are genuinely good and committed, but many of the company’s systems, distribution processes, and technology are significantly outdated. The company recognizes the need for transformation, which is why it has brought in experienced external leadership. However, there appears to be a gap between the transformation vision and the level of investment required to execute it. Large-scale initiatives often face resource and funding constraints, making it difficult to move at the pace needed
