Pros

So far I have been very happy with Mercy Corps. The organization is very flexible and forward thinking (in terms of its policies and practices around flexible work location, etc.) and I find most everyone is genuine and open to new ideas. That said, I think the openess can be sometimes too open and I now find there is some catch up work in regards to the strategic aspect of this. This seems a bit chaotic in nature but I appreciate the fact that it is an organization that is thinking, talking and trying to challenge themselves. They are in a period of huge growth and are thinking about how to make this happen efficiently and effectively.

Cons

First, the organization consistently describes itself as "relationship-driven" and flat yet I don't get the impression that all employees have access to the people or even know who the key people are. I think MC should consider the messaging here. With exponential growth and a highly decentralized structure this may not, in fact, be the message to send. MC is working on this. Second, growth is good but needs to be managed. I see a lot of efforts in this regard. The organization has recently restructured and is really thinking strategically around this growth. My role is a good example of this. A position that takes a very innovative approach to a traditional field. I appreciate this. Third, I was told so many good things about this organization before joining and these things do hold true. I think our teams and our field work are our biggest assets but don't see us using them as such. I hope to see a bit shift in using this asset to communicate our work to people outside! We are not very well known for such a a large organization which is a pity.

Pros

It’s a very tough time to be in ID but MC continues to stay afloat and is trying to pivot in this new landscape. I maintain the staff that’s still here is some of the best of the best, everyone really cares and continues to challenge me and push our programs to do better.

Cons

Outlook is uncertain given donor environment. No real opportunities for professional growth. Ongoing RIFs and loss of talented staff.
