Union benefits, but zero focus on morale or employee needs - Anonymous employee Metropolitan Market Employee Review

Pros

The union, UFCW, provides standards for medical, pay, vacation time, etc.- as well as a few scheduling rules like requiring 10 hours between shifts. The company offers a good discount (15-30%), 2 weeks of vacation after 1 year, and a subsidized bus pass/ORCA program.

Cons

They are extremely customer centered, but seem to forget about employee morale. Inconsistent enforcement of rules, "clique-ish" environment, and it can be difficult or impossible to get the schedule or position you need. Managers tend to be condescending and curt. It's a high-end store, so many customers have extremely high expectations, are often rude, and seem to expect that you'll know what they want- without telling you. If a customer complains, you'll hear about it, even if it was an entirely illegitimate complaint.

Pros

I’ve had to work for two metropolitan markets, one in Tacoma (temp) and one in gig harbor. Both had great people working there. I made good friends there and I felt very welcome. Employees who work there get a 20% discount in everything which is nice because the food quality there is great, there’s always something new to try there!

Cons

I would say the pay isn’t great; it’s a step up from working at Albertsons or any other entry job, but it’s not super livable unless you work there for a long time, 5 years plus.

Pros

Flexible schedule and easy routine work

Reptitive work and often understaffed. Some months can be harder to have consistent hours
