Pros
Michaels is a good place to work for people with other part-time jobs. Co-workers are very sweet and easy to get along with. You can take classes for free and get discounts on craft supplies and custom framing orders. Taking-in orders is creative and fun when the customer is cooperative.
Cons
Most shifts are short, ranging from 3.5-5 hours long. 4-5 days per week. Pay is $8.03 per hour. You cannot support yourself on the pay here without having additional sources of income. Framing is NOT commission based. This company is also slow with raises. Employees are only eligible for raises after working with the company for a full year. And even then, the raise will be minimal. You'd be lucky to get a 25 cent raise. Associates on the floor make even less, ranging between $7.25 and $7.75 per hour. For closing shifts, framers are expected to either sweep the store floor or clean the bathrooms. And then they are expected to do go-backs and front-face the store. Why doesn't Michaels have a janitorial service? Management will constantly harass the framers if they do not complete a custom framing order every 25 minutes, even while juggling customers (taking-in orders and assisting customers with store products) and checking-in boxes (up to 30 in one day! ) of shipment. The floor is always short-staffed and management is always stressed out. Some associates only get 1 shift per week. Sometimes only 1 associate, a manger, and a framer close down the entire store. Working the truck/ stocking is also stressful for those associates, as they are always rushed and literally yelled at by management. The store makes thousands of dollars in framing everyday. Oftentimes doing $20,000 weeks. I know how much money I have made for this company and it makes me sick to know that I'm lucky to make $600 per month. As a framer, you are also expected to UP SELL to everyone and your reports are compared with the other framers. Customers can be nice but are often rude and have made my co-workers cry on several occasions. Apply here if you like to get jerked around with hours and be harassed by management.
