Pros

Good package, friendly team members, trustable team lead. Flexible working hours, good insurance plan.

Cons

For the top management, please reconsider all the decisions before taking action. We are still under the research and development and we are still far away from our competitors such as Waymo and Cruise. We definitely can’t waste one whole months to stop the development for just reaching the number of the unit test code coverage. A lot of methods, applications we may change due to we are still doing R&D. In the end, we may deprecate all the previous methods if we find a better solution. By the time, what’s the point of the previous code coverage?

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. It’s good to hear you’re enjoying the team, culture, and benefits at Motional. In regards to your comments on management decisions, rest assured that we fully review all considerations and impacts before making decisions to take on new initiatives that may cause other activities to slow down. While delays can be frustrating, our goal is to ensure that our tech is as safe as possible. This is why we are continually improving and have various levels of test coverage ranging from software unit test, to simulation, to full-scale vehicle validation. We take safety seriously and initiatives to sharpen our unit test coverage are a part of that priority. Unit tests are needed to give assurance to the developers that their changes are not breaking the stack, allowing them to experiment way quicker and limiting the regressions along the way. If you aren’t clear on the rationale behind any of our decisions, I encourage you to reach out to your managers to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. Best, Laura Major Chief Technology Officer

Pros

Excellent place to learn and grow a career. In software, especially cloud and data products, very kind and collaborative culture of people who work hard to learn and grow. Very good benefits package. Lots of room to have autonomy and to be a builder and a maintainer. Leadership team requires that promotion cases demonstrate real business impact, which makes it a good environment to learn how to be impactful.

Cons

Significant portion of company located in Singapore can be awkward for a few select roles. The company is past the funnest startup phases and needs to be aligned with frugal, fiscally conservative safety-first culture of South Korean Hyundai (parent company). Equity package looks inflated on paper by about 3-4x (the stock options are little more than a tax complication). Lots of red tape. Company moves slow. Cross-functional nature of domain-scoped teams requires program management and a bit of bureaucracy to get many things done. Leadership leverages the glass ceiling effect very effectively, which can have the unfortunate effect of orienting engineers to business problems instead of engineering.
