Pros

There were many smart people to work with. But it is in the past. Now smart engineers are losing their motivation

Cons

After the new CTO was hired, became Motional and with many times of re-org by the new CTO, there are many problems, the following are some: - There is no transparency in promotion system. The system is not fair. Many deserving people who stick for 3 or more years were not promoted. - Leaderships are trying to hire new team leads such that they are in the leadership's wings. It seems that people who can talk nice words to their managers, will get promotion and people who provide feedback about wrong high-level technical decisions or plans, will not get promotion or even get punishment - The number of team leads or tech leads without sufficient technical knowledge is increasing as new hires. As a result, they are proposing some projects and plans that are wasting the whole company resources, these works do not put any technical benefits for the current system

Thanks for your review. I’m sorry to hear your time at Motional was less than ideal, but hopefully I can help address some of your feedback. In regards to promotions, we treat career progression as an ongoing conversation throughout the year with regular one-on-one conversations and twice-annual formal reviews. Promotions are based on a number of factors and criteria including role scope, impact, individual performance, and collaboration -- as outlined in our career framework. We frequently promote from within (especially within engineering), and are working hard to make sure our process is transparent and clearly defined. Additionally, because of how quickly Motional is growing, we have been solving for organizational structure in real time. On the engineering team, we have structured around geography (US and Asia) and functional areas, but as we grow, we continue to look for ways to scale even more effectively. While org restructures are always challenging, I strongly believe we now have the right teams and talent in place to meet our ambitious technical targets. Wishing you the best of luck in your career. Pros

Before becoming Motional there used to be lot of learning opportunities and some sensibility in the leadership.

Cons

After becoming Motional too many politics have pushed the tech backwards and the CTO really needs to understand the ground truth as there are lot of middle men who are giving a false impression on the performance and safety.

Thanks for taking the time to leave this feedback. From your review, it’s clear your experience isn’t what we hope for any of our colleagues. Regarding your comments about leadership, our tech, and safety, I respectfully disagree. We have a talented team across all levels, with a deep bench of world-leading robotics, autonomy, and engineering experts. That doesn’t mean we get it right every time -- we have aggressive targets to meet, and testing, learning, and iterating are all part of the development process. Additionally, we have various levels of test coverage ranging from software unit test, to simulation, to full-scale vehicle validation. At each phase, we do a thorough review of the tests results and implement designs and solutions to resolve issues. Safety and careful product testing underpin everything we do. It is, and will remain, a bedrock driver and key aspect of our mission. If there are specific examples you have from your time with us on how we can improve our processes, I’d be open to having a one-on-one conversation to learn more. Again, I'm sorry you were disappointed in your experience here, and I wish you the best for the future. Laura Major Chief Technology Officer

Pros

Self driving cars are kind of neat

Cons

Didn't pay me what I was offered. HR does not value or respect employees and is not to be trusted. No coherent engineering organization to speak of. Engineers are scattered among disparate science teams with no coordination or leadership. Very little test coverage on a constantly breaking product. Tremendous bus factor.

First, I would like to apologize for my delayed response. I want to thank you for taking the time to share your personal experience and feedback. I am very sorry that your time at Motional didn’t meet your expectations As our company rapidly grows, we remain committed to be a trusted partner, a first-rate technology developer, and a great employer. All employee voices are valued and respected, and our HR and leadership team regularly solicit and encourage candid feedback from our colleagues. Because of how quickly we are growing, we have been solving for organizational structure in real time. On the engineering team, we have structured around geography (US and Asia) and functional areas, but as we grow we continue to look for ways to help our team scale effectively. We are also actively working on enhancing collaboration across our teams’ geographical footprints by providing new tools and resources to help facilitate best practice and knowledge sharing. On test coverage, I respectfully disagree. At Motional, we have various levels of test coverage ranging from software unit test, to simulation, to full-scale vehicle validation. At each phase, we do a thorough review of the tests results and implement designs and solutions to resolve issues. Safety and careful product testing underpin everything we do. It is, and will remain, a bedrock driver and key aspect of our mission. If you would like to share more about your experiences, please contact me so we can set up time to talk. Thank you again for your feedback and best of luck in your future endeavors. Sincerely, Laura Major Chief Technology Officer
