Bad leadership, bad culture - Software Engineer Motus Employee Review

Pros

401k match and unlimited PTO

Cons

Leadership lacks due diligence when making important business decisions, often resulting in wasted resources and projects that go nowhere. There is little accountability for these poor decisions. Company culture is toxic, with a lack of recognition for hard work and talent. Instead, success seems to depend more on popularity than actual performance or contribution. Management tends to focus on self-congratulation, often citing inflated or questionable metrics to justify their actions. This makes it hard to feel motivated or proud of the work being done.

Thanks for sharing your perspective and for all the years you’ve been part of Motus. I appreciate you calling out the positives, and I take the rest of your feedback seriously. The areas you’ve highlighted — leadership accountability, transparency in decision-making, and recognition — are important to get right. We’ve been making strides to strengthen how we communicate the “why” behind decisions, set clearer goals, and ensure recognition reflects real impact and contribution, not just visibility. We’re not perfect, and we won’t get everything right every day, but the commitment is there: to keep improving, to listen, and to make Motus a place where people can feel proud of their work and confident in the culture we’re building together.

Pros

Honestly, this has been one of the best companies I’ve ever worked for. The WFH setup is great, the benefits are solid, and the work/life balance is real. You’re treated like a professional, and you’re trusted to manage your own desk and get things done. You do need to be good at prioritizing and taking ownership, but if you like that kind of independence, it’s perfect. People are open to feedback too. If you see something that could be better, you can speak up and make suggestions. Overall, just a really great place to work. I genuinely enjoy the people I work with.

Cons

I’d say the salary and bonus structure could be clearer. I don’t always have a good understanding of how those decisions are made, and a little more explanation from leadership would really help.

Pros

The job itself, is easy. Set schedule. PTO and Holidays were generous.

Cons

Leadership issues exist at every level of the organization, from upper management down to frontline supervision. There is very little accountability or advocacy for employees, and local management often seems unwilling or unable to address concerns before they become larger problems. While many of these issues may have existed before Motus took over, the company has done little to improve them and, in many cases, has allowed them to continue unchecked. The workplace culture also suffers from a lack of professionalism. Bullying and disrespectful behavior are often tolerated, creating an environment where negativity spreads rather than being addressed. HR will encourage you to come forward with concerns but having no HR present in the office means you will face social retaliation and whatever professional retaliation leadership can get away with. Employees who consistently work hard and take initiative can feel overlooked, there's no merit in doing a thorough job.
