If you're friends with the right people, you can literally barely show up for work and receive bottom of the barrel reviews for years without any real consequences, but if you're an outsider and someone doesn't like you, you can get railroaded out without any opportunity for rebuttal or defense. Supervisors and management provide no support for mobility to other positions in the company.
