Pros

Great staff and personnel. But their voices need to be heard by the Senior Administration.

Cons

Back in 2014-2020, you can only advance in Oxy if you are with the New School mafia. The previous president from the New School hired his own set of people from the New School, and literally made their own little empire at Oxy. So many staff left Oxy because of this. They lost their voices at Oxy. Now that that New School president left in 2020, I am hoping things will be better at Oxy, though there are still 3 people at the top with very very fat salaries running the school. Hopefully the new President from Stanford has his eyes wide open.

Pros

Oxy students are wonderful, and other departments seem great - just not the Hameetman Career Center.

Cons

As long as the current Executive Director is in place, do NOT work at Oxy's Career Center! The ED is so difficult to work for that there is constant turnover - which means that the people still there are constantly overworked and overwhelmed. I only worked there a few years, and the staff completely turned over twice. Additionally, the ED undermines her employees - she will say something is your decision, and then later question or change the decision, or even deny saying it was your decision to make. There is little appreciation for hard work or dedication. Saddest to me is that we never talked about how our work impacts students, which should be the focus of a career center; the focus was always on how the ED looked to external partners. Additionally, there is no work-life balance. All employees are required to be in-person 5 days a week -- however, the ED works remotely whenever she feels like, sometimes for weeks at a time. Needless to say this inconsistency is bad for morale and it felt like everyone on the team was always looking for other jobs. Because people are unhappy, their productivity is not what it could be - plus they are often actively looking for other work which is also a distraction from their current work.
