Pros
Good benefits (health insurance, vacation and sick leave) The actual people themselves (the office workers, and some of the lower supervisors) are very nice, friendly, helpful.
Cons
- Low pay. Almost every position you'll see posted for ODU is for the types of positions that get most of the daily work done, and almost all of them are paid under 30k. The current base-pay I believe for those positions is 28k, which isn't even $15 an hour. They are incredibly inflexible on increasing that. - Very little change for upward mobility in most offices. - Complete refusal to allow teleworking after the pandemic. During the pandemic many people were allowed to telework, either full time or with a hybrid. Since June 2021, there has been an insistence on everyone being in office full time. No hybrid is allowed for many workers. Even people who used to be able to telework occasionally to allow for appointments are being denied. The excuse is that they want students to see a "busy office" even though in-person student visits have dropped massively since the pandemic and many of these offices, students can't even see inside to know that the office is "full" or "bustling." (This is of course not true of faculty, who are allowed to work remotely if they please.) - You have to pay for parking, of which there is very little. You end up paying $400+ a year to have to fight for a parking spot and walk a mile to your office. It's expensive, and unaccessible. - Lack of support and poor management. Bad decisions are blamed on higher-up individuals or departments, who do not listen to any suggestions, complaints, advice, etc. (Prior to the return to office, for example, there was a survey sent out where many to most people recommended at least allowing hybrid telework. The survey was briefly discussed and then apparently ignored.) - You feel essentially like a drone. No one seems to care how you are doing, be it your direct office manager/supervisor, or those in higher-up divisions (SEES, the President, etc.) They are sticklers for being there exactly from 8am to 5pm and not allowing a moment of relaxation or flexibility for that. There is minimal celebration or comradery anymore, at least from higher-ups. The actual daily office workers are all very nice and friendly, but there's little they can do to change anything, and a lot of the comradery is just mutual complaining about how frustrating it all is. - High turnover for most of the above reasons. Many teams are down several people or more due to others quitting. You will be overburdened by other responsibilities as a result, especially on the call center.
