Pros

A lot of young, bright, fun staff. The core mission and approach to global health that PIH supports and promotes is great.

Cons

It's a very political environment and there are a lot of egos. It is also a super elitist organization - a lot of staff that privilege their Ivy League educations. There is no structure for career growth for junior staff - management just assumes (and therefore promotes) that all junior staff is just young people who will go to grad school in a few years. Because of this attitude, turnover is extremely high. Most people working there today, weren't there 3 years ago. The effect this has this has on the whole organization and the lost institutional knowledge is profound. There is no project/program management and no real evaluation of the majority of our programs. After being around for almost 30 years, discussions around this and the complete lack of grant managemt are just beginning. Because of this lack of a clear program management structure, there is zero accountability. Much of the fundraising staff has, despite their best efforts, never even visited a site. There is zero transparency in executive decision making that effects the whole organization. HR is a useless department - it is abundantly clear that their mandate is to ensure that all employees are paid the minimum necessary.

Pros

mission driven, transparent in formal settings and decent work life balance.

Cons

The organization has demonstrated a pattern of not adequately prioritizing or recognizing the contributions of long-tenured, good employees. The org also offers compensation below industry benchmarks (see other comments on the page), and has not followed through on long-promised equity reviews.
