Pros

Realpage has really come a long way by moving their campus to Richardson from Carrollton where we were spread out over 3 buildings. Having a great place to work means more qualified candidates to choose from and better attrition of great employees. The amenities and benefits are great! We joke that they are making it so convenient to be at work, we will never want to leave and that is their goal. Salary is competitive and most of the people I work with are dedicated and hard working. I enjoy being with my work family. Work/Life balance is great in most aspects, with the exception of working from home. I personally don't like to work from home most of the time, but sometimes it just makes sense. It is either not allowed or high discouraged, even if it is a rare request.

Cons

This appears to be a common complaint on here, but the High Deductible (HD) Insurance for families with chronic health conditions. While I understand the benefit for many people, I don't like that it is my ONLY option. I do take advantage of the HSA account but can't afford to put in the full allowable amount. This means when something urgent comes up, I have to pay out of pocket, which means some bill is not getting paid that month Yes, I live paycheck to paycheck. Good thing I also take advantage of the 401K to save money. I end up putting off getting health care because I don't have the money in my HSA account and can't afford to pay out of pocket at that time. It would be nice if we got the RP contribution to the HSA at the first of the year, with the understanding if we leave, we have to pay back a pro-rated share. I use the money in my HSA account as soon as its available every month. There is never any "extra" for emergencies. While RP has done a GREAT job keeping the lines of communication open and keeping the employees in the loop through weekly emails and the employee portal about what is happening company-wide, I feel like it has gotten worse within my division. While we have 1 on 1's with our managers, I feel like I get very little feedback and have no idea how I am doing in the eyes of management. There have been lots of changes at RP and in our divisoin and we tend to find out about things after they happen through word of mouth rather than proactive announcements. (i.e. - new people added to the group or leaving the group) I am speaking specifically about division related changes, not overall RP changes.

Thank you for taking the time to write a thoughtful post. The move to Richardson has been very exciting and I appreciate your comment that we are making it convenient to be a at work. I'm glad you like your coworkers and you are right there are many very dedicated employees who work here. Now on to communication. We are working very hard to have updated employee portal stories and thank you for noticing. However and I agree with you it does not take the place of 1:1 managerial communications. I would encourage you to ask for more feedback and hopefully that message will be conveyed. The engagement survey is only three weeks away and that will be a time for everyone to share their great ideas and opportunities to improve. Now on to your benefits question, if we self funded all the HSA accounts up front it would be over a $2m case advance and then we would have to go about trying to collect the prorated part from those who term. The plan design on aggregate has the company paying 82% of the medical cost and the employee 18%. Many companies have shifted that over to the employee in a greater number.. Now on to the activities that you mentioned. United Way kicks off in two weeks so watch for daily events that will drive engagement for a great cause. I would love to buy you a lunch if you would be so inclined to tap into your great ideas. Sincerely, Kurt Twining 4016

Pros

Good engineering tooling. Talented engineers and teammates. Flexible remote work.

Cons

I ran one of RealPage's larger engineering product teams for three years, hiring and developing more than half of the engineering managers and engineers on my organization. I believed I was building something that mattered. Instead of promoting the person already doing the work, leadership hired a lateral engineering manager alongside me. Over time, responsibility stayed with me while authority and support shifted elsewhere. I became the person expected to absorb every problem. My first manager used me to fill every gap instead of developing me. I was expected to handle support, incident response, production releases, coding, architecture, project management, and people management—all at the same time. My second manager sidelined me, criticized me, and focused on replacing me instead of developing me. I was once told I was "lucky to be useful, or I wouldn't still be here." That statement summed up the culture. Leadership expected constant availability while frequently being unavailable themselves. When leadership was out, I was expected to cover. I spent over a year supporting both U.S. and India time zones, making true time off nearly impossible. RealPage has incredibly talented people, but talented employees cannot overcome a culture where managers are consumed instead of developed. I loved building teams. I just wish the company had valued the people who built them.

Thank you for sharing such a candid and detailed account of your experience. We're glad the engineering tools, talent, and flexibility of remote work stood out positively, and we take seriously what you've described about being stretched across responsibilities without matching authority or support. No manager should feel they have to absorb everything alone, and your point about developing managers rather than overloading them is well taken. We'd welcome the chance to understand your experience further—please consider reaching out to your HRBP so we can address this directly. Thank you for the years you have invested in building your team.
