Pros

The offices are really nice and the cafeteria is awesome! You also have some great benefits, such as an in-house gym and decent insurance. There are many wonderful people working there and the job itself was very rewarding as well.

Cons

Bad executive management in certain departments. Very difficult to advance in the company. While they "encourage" you to apply for other opportunities internally to advance your career, behind the scenes you will suffer retaliation from management if you express interest for other positions in some areas. There is a lot of turnover due to this issue. I'd heard from day one that if you want to get promoted at RealPage, you need to quit for a year, then come back and apply for the position you wanted. I was hoping this wasn't true, but saw many examples of it while I was there. For example, in my department we had people making anywhere from $45k to $110k per year, all doing the same job! This causes lots of frustration among the staff, and certainly does not encourage retention. If you take a position here, GET EVERY DETAIL OF YOUR OFFER IN WRITING! You've been warned! They make lots of promises to get you in the door, then pretend they don't remember them after you start. Also, they will be very vague about your quarterly bonuses. In the time I was there, no one could ever give me a straight answer on how our bonuses were calculated, however they were always a fraction of what I was initially told they would be.

Thank you for your post. We appreciate your Pros and Advice. Something is off in the con section. If you had a manager that "retaliated for seeking an alternative career" that would be very wrong. People change jobs every week and they are encouraged to seek out opportunities. We enjoy seeing people getting ahead. Do we have people making $45k to $110k in the same job? No, we have people at different levels within job classes performing commensurate work for the grades they are in. All employees who receive quarterly bonus on done on a grading system through their leader. That leader should be crystal clear on how this works. We do have grades and salary ranges for every position in RealPage and all jobs are benchmarked against the Radford Global Data Base. We do not hide this and will share with every employee their compensation ratio to the range. This sounds more like you may have experienced a leader who needs some coaching. What you experienced is not the norm. It should also be pointed out that turnover is down year over year. I realize that you have moved on, having said that if you are willing, I would like to learn more about your experience to make your former area better. Please give me a call. Sincerely, Kurt Twining x972-820-4016

Pros

Good engineering tooling. Talented engineers and teammates. Flexible remote work.

Cons

I ran one of RealPage's larger engineering product teams for three years, hiring and developing more than half of the engineering managers and engineers on my organization. I believed I was building something that mattered. Instead of promoting the person already doing the work, leadership hired a lateral engineering manager alongside me. Over time, responsibility stayed with me while authority and support shifted elsewhere. I became the person expected to absorb every problem. My first manager used me to fill every gap instead of developing me. I was expected to handle support, incident response, production releases, coding, architecture, project management, and people management—all at the same time. My second manager sidelined me, criticized me, and focused on replacing me instead of developing me. I was once told I was "lucky to be useful, or I wouldn't still be here." That statement summed up the culture. Leadership expected constant availability while frequently being unavailable themselves. When leadership was out, I was expected to cover. I spent over a year supporting both U.S. and India time zones, making true time off nearly impossible. RealPage has incredibly talented people, but talented employees cannot overcome a culture where managers are consumed instead of developed. I loved building teams. I just wish the company had valued the people who built them.

Thank you for sharing such a candid and detailed account of your experience. We're glad the engineering tools, talent, and flexibility of remote work stood out positively, and we take seriously what you've described about being stretched across responsibilities without matching authority or support. No manager should feel they have to absorb everything alone, and your point about developing managers rather than overloading them is well taken. We'd welcome the chance to understand your experience further—please consider reaching out to your HRBP so we can address this directly. Thank you for the years you have invested in building your team.
