Cons

In my experience, SHRM’s marketing department operates in an environment defined by fear, favoritism, and constant micromanagement. The leadership culture feels toxic—trust is minimal, and there’s little room for independent thought or innovation. Those who question the status quo or advocate for a healthier culture often find themselves suddenly “laid off” or quietly removed. During my time there, turnover was extremely high, with repeated rounds of layoffs and frequent departures. Advancement seems to depend less on skill or performance and more on personal alignment with senior leaders. Constructive feedback is rarely welcomed, and the tone from the top creates a draining and demoralizing environment. If you value respect, transparency, and psychological safety, this is not a place where you’ll thrive. The current job market is tough, and if you need a paycheck, this role may serve as a temporary option. But if you have other opportunities, I’d strongly recommend exploring them first. In my observation, the marketing team tends to hire a lot of very junior talent—perhaps because they’re easier to mold into the “yes-culture” leadership prefers.
