No Respect for Workers, Boring, Flexible - Front Desk Manager San Diego State University Employee Review

Pros

This position offered flexibility with my classes and the job was easy. Aside from the people aspect of it, this job was considerably easy. Requires no heavy lifting, little moving or exercise, and is not an intellectually demanding job.

Cons

Workers are not allowed to utilize times where they have no work to listen to music, do homework, read, or draw. Workers are expected to sit in a chair and face forward for hours on end with no human interaction, even into the late hours of the night and early morning. Workers are paid minimum wage and are expected to deal with dangerous situations, security risks, parent complaints, police, constantly breaking equipment, and extremely rude students. Furthermore, there is little to no support from FDSMs, as they do not offer much leeway. The position is brain numbingly boring and a waste of time, unless you enjoy getting cursed at by drunk college students regularly.

Pros

Coaches are great to work with. When allowed to complete my work the right way, it was fulfilling.

Cons

Deputy leadership allows unprofessional and aggressive communication and does not take any complaints seriously. Communication from my direct supervisor was unprofessional, and he frequently raised his voice at meetings in an aggressive tone when someone asked for clarification. There was a lack of accountability at the Deputy level, and concerns were dismissed. My Direct Supervisor at one point said that I worked for him and would send me inappropriate emails at random times at night, regarding disrespect that was not true. Deputy leadership did nothing about this; if anything, they encouraged negative performance reviews that violated the CBA union agreement. There are inconsistent expectations and communications. You will be treated like an assistant more than the title and not allowed to complete your task. If you do complete your task, they will say, "Make it yours; however, once you do, they will tell you what they told me: I have been working in athletics xxx years, this won't work, I know what coaches want. Eventually, when you do complete it, you will be told they want you to redo it the way they want. There is no professional judgement allowed, even if you know the job and how processes work.
