Pros

Work on many worthwhile projects Opportunity to develop new skills

Cons

The work is GRUELING. Much is expected and very little is rewarded. I don't know how anyone is able to have a family when you're traveling for weeks at a time with very little rest time in between. Salaries are truly abysmal. Senior management seems to be out of touch with reality, most likely because very few have any meaningful experience living and working abroad.

Save the Children US Response

Hey there... you're right. Our work is HARD. We're all doing all we can to accomplish our mission for children around the world, and this year was particularly hard on all of us with 3 Hurricane Responses at the same time, the Rohinga crisis, the Syria crisis, the East Africa crisis.... you get the point. Can you please share some more feedback with us? Seems like you have some good ideas about how we can make things better! Please reach out to me at tferrett@savechildren.org, or please reach out to your HR Business Advisor!!

Pros

Save the Children offers deeply meaningful, mission-driven work alongside colleagues who are genuinely committed to impact. I’ve had a very positive experience with my manager, and there are many strong, thoughtful professionals across the organization. More recently, new staff coming in have been high-caliber and bring fresh energy and expertise. There are signs the organization is moving in a more positive direction, and benefits and flexibility are solid for the nonprofit sector.

Cons

There was a major reduction in staffing over the course of a year, carried out in several large phases due to a decline in public funding. This was followed by a number of senior staff departures, which, in combination, affected morale and increased uncertainty across teams. From a staff perspective, the pace and communication around these changes sometimes felt abrupt and not always clearly explained. While change is never easy, the experience was particularly challenging for those navigating ongoing transitions and shifting priorities. At times, there can also be a perception of inconsistency in how personnel decisions are made, which can further impact trust.
