Pros

- The Denver office location is pretty decent - Interesting technical challenges - There's a new CEO. It's hard to comment here because not much time has passed, but so far he seems like a cool guy and my personal outlook on this is positive. So this review is really about the state of things pre-Peter. - The culture is good, but it's also bittersweet. See the cons.

Cons

- SearchSpring tends to prefer external hires over internal promotions. The cycle is "wouldn't it be cool if we had someone who could this for us", then run with that idea, new hire becomes a temporary poster child, they find out the new hire/position isn't actually a good idea, new hire leaves, existing employees (who have been growing for years) are left where they are, told they're not qualified for the position, and repeat. - SearchSpring claims they're employee-first and all about employee growth, but it's a facade. They say that until anyone (even highly talented, senior employees) wish to move up from their current position, despite repeated failures to find anyone more talented and more qualified for the positions than the untapped talent they already have. Instead, you'll be seen as entry-level regardless of how long you've been there or how much you've grown over those years, unless you practically force them to look at you differently. - The engineering team is underpaid, and they consistently attempt to convince you you're a lower level engineer than you are. It's worse in other departments, and it would seem that engineering actually has it the best. - There exists a ever-permeating insecurity that the employees are trying to take advantage of the company (when really they just want to be recognized), which trickles down and creates a toxic environment and tension. - Among the senior staff, there's a feeling of "support group" and most of the people, ironically, only stay because the other depressed employees support each other and have, over years, become afraid that they wont have that type of support at other companies (even though they would have much better luck elsewhere).

Searchspring Response

Painful feedback, but thank you. I'm the new CTO of Searchspring and want to address the concerns you have from an engineering perspective. Growth: We have implemented a new system for tracking career development, what a role is, how you become that role - It's open-source and you can also use it in your new company - https://github.com/searchspring/competencies. This system also helps with recognition within the team and we use it to validate pay increases. We have also created a $1,000 a year learning budget for all employees that renews each year and can be used at their discretion to advance their career. We just promoted Zach to the team lead of the new Snap SDK team! And even though not my department, there are notable promotions and career development now happening across the entire organization. Pay: We definitely have underpaid our engineers in the past and the first step in rectifying this has been taken. A subsequent plan to bring people up in pay to our internal bands is happening as I write this. Please reach out if you think Searchspring is now worth another look. careers@searchspring.com

Pros

None. Used to be a fun and motivating place to work until they brought in a new CEO. Went downhill fast from there.

Cons

The company was bought out and they brought in a new CEO and their posse so it's just one giant clique. New CEO is a ghost, forgot he's even part of the company at times. Seems like only Senior management gets the promotions/ raises. Communication is non-existent. Poor culture. Poor growth opportunities just a lot of false promises.
