Pros

The benefits were excellent. You get 24% off AT&T phone service and 22% off Verizon. You get $4/day to commute to not drive your own car (alone) to work. You qualify for tons of perks including discounted movie tickets, discounts at local businesses and gyms. You also get access to Seattle Children's fitness facilities too. You can ride their shuttles for free (mine was 1 block from my home to right behind my lab) and you get a free unlimited ORCA pass for the Seattle metro, sound transit, the works.

Cons

Okay, so the hiring process is tedious. They require you to be up-to-date vaccinated on mmr, hep b, tetanus, the works before you can even start work. They also require you to do a drug test (I went to immediate clinic on capitol hill). The workplace is no marijuana tolerance so make sure you're not smoking anytime before that test because while it may be legal in Washington, it's not at Children's. Then you have the most thorough background check of your life, so if there's so much as a smudge, you should just come clean. Once hired, I was working at a lab in downtown Seattle and while I was being paid for a 40-hour workweek, they expect you to work 9-6 (with a lunch a 2 15-minute breaks). Normally, lunch and breaks are paid for but not here. This equates to them expecting you to work 45 hour a week (without overtime). A lot of people were working far more than 45-hour weeks as well, so I'm not sure how it's legal, but that's the way they do things so be ready to put in free overtime for as long as you work there. I personally had a bad experience with the pretentious-post doc I worked under. He constantly tried to demean me and talked to me like I was stupid, and it was the worst work experience I've had in my life. It's not worth the $35,000 a year to be treated like scum, especially since I just found out I've just been accepted to UCSF for a Master's of Science program. I was accused of having poor technique and not being up-to-par with protocols and procedures (even though I had previously worked in a lab for many years). Quite honestly with the work they were slamming me with, it seemed like what they needed was a Research Associate II or III but I'm guessing they were trying to save some money. Pretty deceitful if you ask me. I had also been told that the man that interviewed before me had asked for more money (the lab declined), but now I see why.

Pros

Front line staff genuinely care and are committed to the organization, even though it has changed dramatically for the worse.

Cons

Leadership under new CEO (Longhurst) has quickly become toxic. Long time employees and leaders are exiting quickly. Return to office mandate is going into effect in October 2026 and has caused massive upheaval and unproductive work for months as employees seek answers and get none. This comes after years of successive waves of layoffs and financial struggles that have damaged trust in executive leadership and the board. SCH used to care about mission and now it cares about keeping up with tech company trends and petting CEO’s ego.
