Pros

Hybrid work schedule, decent healthcare coverage and pay

Cons

I have no idea where to begin with this place. It's one of the worst places to work on the planet. I was so excited to work at Selective when I first started because of all of the positive things I heard; sadly after almost 6+ years, I'm a former burnout employee who never wants to step back in an office environment because of how terrible this company treated me throughout the years. There is 0 work life balance to this place, no matter how much they will preach it during your interview and in internal emails, don't believe them. I swear, this employee base is brainwashed to think this is a "great place to work" because they need to lie to themselves to get through the day. Managers and senior leaders want employees to make Selective their entire life AND personality. With the employees that play the game of making Selective their entire life and personality, they are consider a favorite on a team and those individuals will get raises more frequently, bigger bonuses, and of course promotions like crazy. With the employees who have a hard boundary of work life balance are punished with more work, not enough credit, and always belittling. Also, the political game and backstabbing at Selective is one of the worst I have ever seen at any company. Oh also, as in most companies, HR will never protect you. Selective's HR department will not only NOT protect you, but they will throw you under the bus too! I know my review will not change the cultural at Selective, but I hope it will save some poor innocent soul considering this company to work at. TLDR: Do not work here if you want to have any sort of joy in your life. This place will drain your soul.

Pros

Decent benefits and decent coworkers

Cons

Working at Selective was a toxic work environment shaped by favoritism, excessive workload expectations, and poor boundaries around employee availability. Management often applied expectations unevenly, which created a lack of fairness and accountability. High performance did not always seem to be the primary factor in decision-making, which undermined trust in leadership. There was also a strong “big fish, small pond” dynamic, where internal status and informal influence often carried more weight than actual performance or collaboration. This contributed to a highly political environment where trust between colleagues was limited and information did not always feel safe to share openly. Employees were expected to be available far beyond normal working hours, creating an unsustainable “always on” culture with no real work-life balance. The workload was consistently too high for the compensation provided. Internal politics further interfered with day-to-day work and made collaboration more difficult than it needed to be. In practice, this environment often encouraged self-preservation over teamwork, which made it difficult to build trust or rely on others consistently. Overall, the environment was not structured in a way that supported long-term employee wellbeing or retention. This is not a workplace that supports a healthy work-life balance. For me, the experience felt unsustainable, and over time it became clear that the environment was not conducive to long-term growth or wellbeing.
