Pros
- The company wants to bring a Four Seasons-style moviegoing experience, hence the minimalist chic, lavish bathrooms and leather seating. All auditoriums have reserved seating (a la airline reservations), so customers don't have to arrive super early to get a good seat. - Depending on your position, days are generally easy and routine. And when a big movie comes out, it can be hectic but manageable. - The owners and CEO regularly visit the complex every couple of months, and they are generally very nice! Most of the management and HR people are easy to get along with too. - Spiffy work uniforms (black shoes & black pants with red chef coats for concessionists, customer service and ushers; black chef coats for waitstaff, housekeeping and managers). - Flexible hours (you can generally find someone to work or switch with if you can't come in)-- and unlike other theater chains, the hours scheduled are consistent. You will work your entire shift even if it's slow. (Unless it's dead or if you have a bad run-in with a customer, you won't get called off early.) And for housekeeping, it's easy to accumulate overtime. - Holiday pay! Even if you're part-time, if you work on a holiday (New Year, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas), you will get paid double your hourly rate. Considering the company pays higher than minimum wage on principle, that's a fantastic benefit. - Starting this year, the company is offering some health benefits to part-timers as well as hourly and salaried full-timers. Some are even portable, i.e. accident, critical illness and hospital coverage. - 35% discount on food from Trilogy Restaurant and concessions. - 4 free movie passes per month (movies have to be out for two weeks or more) and employee screenings on Thursday nights.
Cons
- When it first opened, it used to be 6 employee passes and could be used anytime on Monday - Thursday (meaning some employees used them for Thursday night premieres). They've since clamped down on it (due to abuse), which makes it difficult to see a smaller film that doesn't last more than two weeks. - One assistant manager was full of himself and didn't trust me to do my job. The manager that hired me was great at first, and now doesn't care less. - The Thursday employee screenings are usually at 10:30-11 p.m. at night. - Scheduling favoritism, which wasn't a problem for the first several months when the business opened last October. When I worked at a previous movie theater, I knew off-period time is generally slower, which means shorter hours. During the first several months Silverspot was open, I worked 4-5 days a week. February to mid June it was 2 days a week, got an extra day during summer and now back down to 2 days. I had open availability, had a good attitude, almost never called out, arrived at work on time, and worked other employees' shifts if they called out. I politely asked for more hours (even talked to HR about it), but for some reason, the same two employees would get them instead.
