Pros

Learned some new skills that are broadly applicable.

Cons

Specialty Care has predatory employment contracts and non-competes. The typically make you sign a contract saying that you will pay a multi thousand dollar fee for ending your contract early. In the instance that the position is not a good fit or you are unhappy with the position this poison pill in the contract practically forces employees to stay with the company. Regarding the non-compete, if you were to attempt to leave this job for the same position at a different company but higher pay you would need to essentially move hundred of miles away according to the non-compete. Considering this company already doesn't pay people what they are worth this type of lateral move is effectively not possible. I'd argue this makes the non-compete overly capricious. This all makes sense within the context of Specialty Care's culture. They have a hard time retaining employees and are currently very understaffed and use their leverage over current employees to get them to work harder and longer without offering further compensation. This includes being on call. It is typical to be scheduled for A LOT of call. Call is compensated at $2/hr which is pitifully low considering psychologically your mind is in a working mindset and you can't be further than 30 minutes away from the hospital. The company also used Covid as an excuse for not offering raises well into 2022. Meanwhile their payroll was not full and they could have easily paid employees more due to individuals working harder but there being fewer employees overall. Management is not only unresponsive to reasonable complaints from employees regarding culture but actively adds to a predatory, unkind, unprofessional environment. When earnest concerns have been brought up about work culture management has does their best to be utterly dismissive. Further, management offloads higher level decisions onto lower level employees. Issues such as scheduling are often not supported at the managerial level. I cannot emphasize enough how deeply rooted these problems are in specialty care. They do not operate in good faith with their workers.
