Pros

While I cannot speak for the sales or marketing side of the business, the recent negative reviews do not apply to engineering in my view. It's just not an accurate reflection of my day-to-day experience as an engineer in Spire. After working at *many* different outfits from big-tech to startups, in different roles ranging from an IC to a team lead to an eng-manager for a number of years now, I feel like I can give a more realistic comparison. This is what I think: 1) There's plenty of interesting and fairly meaningful work. One of the few places where opportunities for learning are very wide and deep, but caveat: only if you are self-motivated to dig deep and learn. If you want to just be in your little corner and do your own thing, no one will force you to step out. Unlike a typical software firm where you work on yet-another-js/go/python/rust backend for some SaaS product and are bored in 6 months, the Spire tech stack is very wide because we have all these products that stretch across hardware and software stacks and scientific disciplines. It's also very deep because the science is cutting-edge and built on years of research. If you're bored of being a code monkey perpetually stringing together arbitrary APIs and frameworks, you can invest some time looking at the embedded side of things, or maybe spend time to pick up some DSP and FPGA development, or go deeper in the science behind some of the products. Lots of opportunities to grow - but only for the willing. 2) Spire needs people who are self-motivated, independent, reliable, data-driven, curious and technically skilled. In return, Spire will pretty much trust you with as much independence as you can take and let you do your thing and hopefully make significant business impact. But if you don't have those attributes then maybe look elsewhere. You will likely find working here frustrating - for yourself and for your co-workers.

Cons

1) Some of the things that have been said before are real. In the drive for profitability, people have been let go. While very unpleasant and distressing, the business needs to shed weight to be profitable. 2) There is not enough structure and incentives to encourage proper coaching, peer feedback or career guidance. There are quarterly reviews. But depending on your manager who may be located in a different continent, these are perfunctory at best. 3) While I have no doubts that we have some bright folks in this company, I feel like the overall engineer culture and standards can be improved. More ownership and less excuses would be my focus.

Pros

PTO benefits were solid. Many of the non-executive hires are highly capable and easy to work with.

Cons

There appears to be a lack of clear direction at the organizational level, with a primary focus on short-term financial outcomes. Office spaces are largely underutilized and not well maintained. There is also a noticeable disconnect between leadership flexibility and expectations placed on newer employees regarding in-office presence. Overall morale seems to be impacted.
