Pros

Mature and competent colleagues. Transparant and engaged middle-management. Nice location (Sale) and recently (2024) refurbished offices. Free parking. 37 hour contracts, Fridays are early finish and dress-down. Flexible hybrid working (depending on the department). Flexible working hours (depending on the role). High staff retention (depending on the department), people stay in their roles for years. Excellent travel links - metrolink (Dane Road) is around the corner and the motorway (Junction 7 M60) is at the end of the road. Local town centre is 10 minute walk away for the lunch breaks. There is a government-funded apprenticeship scheme available (coursework to be completed in addition to your workload). Gender diversity in staff and management is fairly balanced. Meternity/paternity/adoption leave is generous.

Cons

Distant and disengaged upper management and HR. Benefits are thin on the ground - private pension, cycle to work scheme, free flu voucher, free eye test, that's about it. Pay only increases by 3.5% annually, usually lower than inflation and much less than the minimum wage increases, so it's a real-term pay cut year on year with no option to renegotiate salary. There's no dedicated training department, which is unusual for such a large company. You will be trained by your colleagues and once established you will be expected to train new starters. No unions recognised and no shop stewards. Career progression opportunities are very rare. In several years there have been 3 or 4 waves of redundancies, periodically the company makes budget cut-backs and re-organises staff and duties to seek efficiencies.

Pros

I worked alongside a team that was consistently supportive and always willing to make time to answer questions, which made a meaningful difference in my day-to-day experience. There was a real sense of collaboration, and having people who were approachable and dependable made it much easier to navigate a fast-paced, high-volume sales environment. It helped create a bit of stability and camaraderie even during more demanding or repetitive parts of the role. Overall, it was a company operating as a leader in the space, which added to the scale and pace of the experience

Cons

This was my experience working at Shred-it, which is a subsidiary of Stericycle. If you’ve ever wondered what zero autonomy feels like, this is your spot. The day was a nonstop loop of cold calls, cold walk-ins, and more cold calls, with a mandatory “smile and dial” every morning. On the Shred-it team selling waste bins, it often felt like creativity and independent thinking were… safely shredded. Management could be extremely hands-on to the point of micromanagement, with frequent check-ins and scripted role-play scenarios that rarely reflected real conversations in the field. Communication style could come across as condescending or patronizing at times, especially on team calls, which made for an uncomfortable environment when feedback felt more critical than constructive.
