Pros
If your passion is doing significant research with some of the brightest people dedicated to developing therapies to treat devastating diseases, and you don't mind obstacles, then Stony Brook is a place you can do that.
Cons
Stony Brook does not care about basic research or the research support staff that are critical for the success of academic science. Bright fancy buildings and embarrassingly obsolete core facilities to support research are what to expect here. Stony Brook administrators will cry poverty every chance they get. Of course, their salaries are quite healthy. Do not dismiss this as a rant, it's a fact that many administrative assistants with NO degrees make more money than scientists and postdocs. They can afford to live on Long Island. Make no mistake, this place is expensive and scientist salaries do not cut it here. What are the priorities at Stony Brook when administrators, tasked with supporting the research mission of the university, feel as if researchers and their staff are a burden? I really don't know. Stay away from here if you can.
