Expectations vary depending on whether management sees you as someone they want to promote, creating an unfair and inconsistent work environment. Managers set standards that they don't consistently enforce, and employees are often encouraged to compete against their coworkers rather than work as a team. A recurring pattern is that employees who are initially identified as future management candidates often become frustrated with the inconsistent treatment and leave within a year. When they leave, management frequently shifts its attention to someone else who had previously been overlooked, only to repeat the same cycle.
