Pros

Being able to develop meaningful relationships with residents. Making a difference in the final chapter of their lives.

Cons

Consistently not given the tools and supplies to perform the work required. As our resident population decreased, staff hours were cut back making situation where we would have to get upwards of 9 residents up, showered, toileted, dressed. The majority of these were wheelchair bound. Honesty is not the practiced behavior. I've witnessed family members and employees lied to on a regular basis. The pay is extremely low (start at minimum wage) for the work and the difference we make. Sunrise Senior Living is all about the numbers and the money and does not focus on the quality of care and the quality of employment. I did this work from the love in my heart, but management had no concern over that. Most management have limited or no education beyond high school and it shows in their communication, critical thinking and writing capabilities. As a caregiver, I was asked to do employee write-ups on behalf of leads because it was felt my writing skills were better for communicating what was needed. Employees are not treated fairly and there is an environment where the first person to raise on an issue with management, even if it is only half of the situation, that person is always correct. If you're not among the clique of the cool employees, they won't help in shared duties on your assignment. This is hard work that is physically, emotionally and mentally exhausting. To have to fight an uphill battle with a company that is only focused on profit versus working from the heart is just not right.

Pros

It's no a bad company, its bad leadership at the top with no senior living experiance and understanding of the business making horrific decisions.

Cons

Activity Directors are now being required to manage the concierge desk in addition to their existing responsibilities, which already include running daily programming, driving the bus, and supporting residents across the community. This expanded role means they are expected to be available from to 8 to 8, 7 days a week to, cover concierge shifts, train new concierge staff, and answer their phones even after they have clocked out. These are hourly employees. Expecting them to remain reachable and accountable outside of paid hours . Adding concierge management, shift coverage, and staff training on top of a already full plate, without any additional compensation, sends a message that their time and wellbeing are not valued. Work life balance is NOT important to the new leadership team. Activity Directors are the heartbeat of a senior living community. They are also the lowest paid managers in the building. Burning them out with unsustainable expectations will ultimately affect the residents they work so hard to serve and the business as a whole. Whoever allowed this decision to be made without any kind of raise, clearly has no clue about what it takes to be an Activity director and lacks education in senior living. Their attitude through all this is they want to raise the Activity Directors up and give them more opportunities to grow, but not financially. And if they dont like it, theres the door.
