Pros
It's a small community where you get to know most everyone on campus, depending on your job position. However, both upper and middle administration already have a predetermined outcome for filling job postings. If they're hellbent on hiring an external candidate, internal candidates have ZERO chance; if they're promoting a favored employee, even the best external candidate has NO chance to get hired.
Cons
Very inbred thinking, increasing the silo effect at the expense of collaborative work, and nearly no accountability for hostile co-workers. As long as you don't threaten someone's life, you can be as grotesquely demeaning to colleagues and all they get is a simple "conversation."
