Pros
Customer engagement is quite strong. There is excellent interaction with Fortune 500 companies. You can expect to work closely with application teams, sometimes from within their network. Your names are the top of all reports, your technical advice is respected and usually followed, and application teams will look to you for recommendations. Managers are technically skilled and are usually able to drive a plan forward that results in a positive improvement for the office or the larger SIG department. Management respects your opinion and is very willing to give you career opportunities whenever possible. Their door is almost always open if you need to run something by them. Compensation is good and was recently re-aligned with industry norms, so you can ignore any pre-2018 salary reports on this site. Mid-level security consultants can expect to see 76-80k, not counting 401k matching at 3k, ESPP stock at a 15% discount, or variable bonuses or profit-matching. Work-life balance is not imbalanced by management and there's generous PTO. Other perks include numerous training opportunities, sponsorship to visit security conferences, group leaders who are technically strong and good teachers, and breakfasts in the office once a week. For some reason, the job descriptions discuss travel, but there are 0 travel requirements, so you can settle in if you have a family.
Cons
The Bloomington office is part of Synopsys' managed security services. The work tasks, especially the more automated ones, are pre-structured, which can result in somewhat repetitious work. This is largely balanced by the dynamics of different clients and the complexities of the application at hand. The Bloomington office coordinates with the Bangalore office, but tends to be somewhat isolated from the rest of the company, even within the set of 350 security employees within the larger hardware-focused company. Management is working to improve this. There is also a known knowledge ceiling. Once you master the set of technical services, next steps include leadership, management, or moving to a different office. This can usually be accomplished in two or three years. Management is slowly working on this.
