Low pay, no direction, no communication, empty promises. Large corporations want to treat their employees as fungible cogs which creates a working environment where developers are not appreciated. When competent developers end up at a job that does not feel rewarding, they can easily move to a different one. The end result is a workplace that mostly appeals to people who are not very good at what they do, and even if somebody good or eager to learn is hired, they will quickly realize they are in the wrong place and leave. High turnover and widespread apathy among teams results in undocumented software and processes built on top of a jumbled, unmaintainable, unstandardized mess of a code base running your business. Enter private equity firm who will work their magic (layoffs) to pump up the company and make it look profitable before they sell it to the next large corporation.
